Hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus)
Conservation status
It is certainly the most heavily-traded parrot, first legally and then illegally for private sale. This situation took the species to the brink of extinction, especially as it is hard for birds in the wild to find ideal nesting spots. Over the past six years a lot of attention has been directed to captive breeding and, at the same time, to the protection of the species' natural habitat. Thanks to these efforts the number of birds is increasing considerably.
It is listed on Appendix I of the Washington convention. The birds in our Park were given to us in April 1994 by the Italian forestry service. They are part of an EEP and are a good example of how biological reserves resulting from the fight against smuggling can be managed and used to the species' advantage.
